Tunisian-themed Tweets outpace recent Sudan, Cote d’Ivoire spikes
The unrest in Tunisia and the self-removal of President Ben Ali from power has become a top international story over the past couple of hours. Media reports, often citing the Tunisian use of Twitter as a platform to encourage change, have fueled the online activity. Time will tell how prolonged the widespread interest in Tunisia remains on Twitter. Of course, raw trends cannot gauge the activity of the core advocates for change located within the country. Either way, the end of President Ali’s rule has created a greater temporary spike in interest on Twitter than the Sudanese referendum for independence or Ivorian President Gbagbo’s refusal to back down caused in previous weeks.
