Of fourteen African nations surveyed from May 2012 through April 2013, only two (Kenya and South Africa) were found to have true online freedom. Sudan and Ethiopia were found to lack it.
True online freedom in Africa requires legal and political support
Most African nations have partly free online access. The decision may be less about censorship and more about manipulation of information. All African governments need to better address what exactly constitutes online freedom of speech.
