East Africa Report – Digital Marketplace
This video, posted on YouTube in early November by ABNDigital, highlights the up-and-coming digital marketplace in Kenya. Not only do Kenyans living abroad purchase items for relatives in Kenya, but Kenyans now enjoy shopping from their own homes or local access points. In fact, the video mentions how a growing number of Kenyans order cars from Japan which are then shipped to Mombasa. Faster bandwidth may provide the means of connecting to the sites, but e-payment systems are still in the early stages. The biggest challenge may actually be trust rather than technology. PayPal generally won’t accept Kenyan payments due to security reasons. Start-up mobile payment systems require a degree of faith from the user that the payment will actually find its intended recipient.
Additionally, online shoppers must be cognizant of security features. Only relay billing information over a secure connection, and be sure to log out of public computers.
